Lolita's Corner: ;^)
Welcome to Lolita's Corner! You many know me as Lolita, Lola, Jane, or Patti. If you can't remember the name, you certainly can't forget the face. ;^)

Over the course of the next few months I'd like to share some of my ideas and feelings about Diablo, and mutiplayer gaming with you. At the bottom of this page you'll find a link to post your thoughts regarding my ideas. I'd like to know what you think! Your posts will be automatically updated to a bulletin board. Speak up and let your feelings be known, my fellow EoD members!

Lolita's Corner: A suggested protocol for fair dueling
Before the subject of dueling can be appropriately addressed, you must decide exactly what it is you wish to test.

If the purpose of dueling is to test who can use the most surreptitious, or clandestine hacks, then normal open-game dueling -- as it currently exists on battle-net is the way to go. Most duelists in open games have designed a combination of weapons or armor or rings, amulets, or other items, and which to see if they have devised an improvement which will allow them more "damage" then the party they are dueling with.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with this approach to dueling, as long as all parties realize that they are testing their ability to "sneak" in either new combinations of items, or hacks that the other party is not aware of.

Some players with single- digit intelligence quotients, will display hit-point values of more than 800. I have seen some idiots with hit-point values of 1600 -- who have steadfastly maintained that they do not cheat and were not using any hacks. They attributed their incredible hit-point values to "hacked" rings and amulets. That has the same credulity as suggesting that the Clintons never have lied!

My primary supposition is that dueling should be a test of tactics, and skill. I feel the best example of this can be found in "one-design sailboat racing".

One-design sailboat racing works as follows. All participants race in the same type of sailboat. Ideally this means that SKILL should be the deciding factor in winning a race. It seems to me that this is EXACTLY what dueling should be all about. Therefore, it is necessary that all dueling take place on a "LEVEL PLAYING FIELD".
